How to improve your spoken English at your workplace

A quick glance at the essentials

It may seem trivial, but even the simplest communication requires correct grammar and syntax. So if you want to know how to improve your oral English in and out of the office, don't forget to consolidate the basics.

Get a manual or rely on the internet to know exactly what and where to look when you need to revise certain rules. Either way, relax: with a few exceptions (eg, the third conditional), English grammar isn't too complicated.

Configure your devices in English

Social networks, e-mails, operating systems, specific software… whatever your job, there is a good chance that you will be confronted with a screen.

Whether it's a computer, a smartphone, or a tablet, nothing will help you improve your spoken English as well as change the language of the devices you use. What's great is that you can put this tip into practice right away: even if you're confused at first, I guarantee it's worth it.

Standard formulas, expressions, and abbreviations: learn them as soon as possible.

Life in the company is made up of so many terms that you have to learn quickly if you want to keep up! To get started, make sure you know all the polite opening and closing formulas for emails, whether formal or informal.

Likewise, memorize key acronyms so you can receive and communicate information more quickly. Finally, try to assimilate the typical expressions of business English: while many are similar and common to all environments, for the more specific terms you will have to raise your antennae and implement the following advice, which is…

Take notes!

Here's what I do: if I hear a particularly interesting English expression, I immediately jot it down to memorize it. Notes on your smartphone, notebooks, diaries, and post-its:

Write where you want, but do it, because in your work environment you risk being inundated with sayings, technical terms, and useful phrases that you don't have any interest in letting go of!

Stay up to date, but do it in English!

In the world of work, as you know, it is more important than ever to stay up to date: magazines and reference texts for the sector – or the field in which you wish to evolve professionally – are precious resources.

Why not capitalize on these open doors? Read the news, consult manuals, listen to podcasts or take online courses in English: in this way, you will not only increase your skills and knowledge, but you will also improve your language and enrich your vocabulary.

If you are wondering how to improve your spoken English in a work environment, here is one of the most effective ways!

TV series? In the original language!

What could be better than settling down in front of a television series after a tiring day?

If you're familiar with screens, you already know that one of the most fun ways to improve your spoken English is to watch TV programs in the original language. I, therefore, recommend that you do not miss the best shows set in a wide variety of environments, starting with the funniest sitcoms:

Parks and Recreation, The Office, The IT Crowd, Scrubs, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The choice is practically infinite!

Interact with colleagues

Never skip a coffee break! Breaks are great for productivity and provide endless opportunities to bond with the people around you.

Talking is already an excellent exercise: the more you do it, the more self-confidence you will have. Also, colleagues can be very supportive if you want to improve your English: you can ask them to correct you if you make mistakes, or to check presentations and reports.

Train your ear

How to improve your oral English outside the office? Of course, by not missing the opportunity to interact with this language!

Whether you are in France or abroad, online or offline, you can use English to speak to people all over the world, allowing you to get used to a wide variety of accents and practice your oral comprehension skills.

If you have native-speaking friends, keep them close: they can help you a lot with pronunciation and vocabulary!

New words? Use them now

Let's be frank: what a great satisfaction to use a new word correctly and to be proud of it!

This also applies to English: try to use the words and phrases you learn as soon as possible, you will gain fluency immediately!

Choose a good English course

Still confused? Don't worry: learning the vocabulary of a particular industry, especially if it's very technical, can be tricky, even for those who have mastered English for years.

So the best advice I can give you is to consider a professional English course. Choosing one with native speakers is the only way to best prepare yourself for all your professional challenges!

Why is it useful to improve spoken English?

At this point, I think it's clear: improving your oral English is a skill that should not be left to chance. In any professional context, being able to express yourself fluently allows you to perform your duties to the best of your ability and to communicate with your colleagues and superiors in a relaxed manner.

And that's not all: excellent English is just as useful if you want to build a career or are looking for a job: knowing the terminology of your
